Merzouga or Zagora? Choosing your Sahara desert trip in Morocco

The two most popular desert trips in Morocco are very different. Here's an honest comparison, so you can choose the right one for your time and your expectations.

Golden dune crests of Erg Chebbi stretching to the horizon

In short

  • Merzouga has the big dunes: Erg Chebbi, over 20 km long and up to about 150 m high. It's 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech, 7 to 8 from Fes. Plan 3 days or more.
  • Zagora is closer to Marrakech (7 to 8 hours) but its dunes are small. It works for a 2-day trip.
  • Erg Chigaga, beyond M'Hamid, has large wild dunes but needs a long 4x4 crossing.
  • If you have 3 days or more, or you're starting from Fes, Merzouga is the better choice for most travelers.

Why this is the big question

Almost everyone who plans a trip to Morocco wants to see the Sahara, and almost everyone ends up choosing between two names: Merzouga and Zagora. Travel agencies in Marrakech sell both, often side by side, with very similar photos. But the experiences are not the same, and choosing the wrong one is the most common disappointment we hear about.

We live in Merzouga, so we're not neutral. But we'll be honest: Zagora is the right choice for some travelers, and we'll tell you who. What matters is that you know what you're getting.

The dunes: the biggest difference

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco's two great ergs, or seas of sand dunes. It stretches about 22 kilometres from north to south, up to 5 or 6 kilometres across, and its highest crests rise about 150 metres above the surrounding desert. When you picture the Sahara, with tall, sharp orange dunes and camel caravans on the crests, this is what you're picturing.

Zagora is a town in the Draa valley, famous for its palm groves and its old sign reading "Tombouctou 52 jours", 52 days by camel to Timbuktu. The dunes closest to Zagora, around Tinfou, are small: pretty, and good for a short camel ride and a night at camp, but nothing like the scale of Erg Chebbi. Many travelers who choose Zagora expecting big dunes are surprised by how modest they are.

The other great erg of Morocco, Erg Chigaga, lies south-west of Zagora, beyond the village of M'Hamid at the end of the road. Its dunes are large and very wild, but reaching them means about 60 kilometres of desert track by 4x4 from M'Hamid, which is itself around 95 kilometres past Zagora.

From Marrakech, Zagora is closer by about two hours each way, which is why 2-day desert tours from Marrakech almost always go there. From Fes, there's no contest: Merzouga is the natural destination, and Zagora is out of the way.

What you see on the way

Both trips from Marrakech start the same way: over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with a stop at Aït Benhaddou. Then they split. The road to Zagora heads south through the Draa valley, one of Morocco's longest and most beautiful palm valleys, with earthen villages and kasbahs along the river. The road to Merzouga heads east through the Dades valley and the Todra gorge, with towering canyon walls, the Skoura palm grove and the Valley of Roses.

Both routes are spectacular. The Merzouga route has the more dramatic mountain scenery and gorges; the Zagora route has the greener palm valley. A good way to see both is a longer loop that goes out through one and back through the other.

Camps and activities

Around Erg Chebbi you'll find the widest choice in Morocco: simple Berber camps, comfortable standard camps and luxury camps with private bathrooms, plus camel treks, 4x4 tours, quad rides, sandboarding, nomad family visits and Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia. Because Merzouga is at the end of a paved road, even luxury camps are easy to reach, and your luggage can travel by 4x4.

Around Zagora, camps are fewer and generally simpler, and activities centre on short camel rides and visits to the palm groves and old kasbahs. At Erg Chigaga, camps are remote and atmospheric, with fewer people, but everything (food, water, guests) has to cross the desert by 4x4.

Who should choose which

Choose Merzouga if…

  • You want the classic image of the Sahara: tall dunes, camel caravans on the crests, a sea of sand to the horizon.
  • You have three days or more, or you're starting from Fes.
  • You'd like a range of comfort levels, from a simple tent to a luxury tent with a private bathroom.
  • You want more than a camel ride: 4x4 trips, quads, music, nomads, fossils and markets.
  • You're travelling from Marrakech to Fes (or the reverse) and can cross the desert on the way.

Choose Zagora if…

  • You only have two days and are starting and ending in Marrakech.
  • You're more interested in palm groves, kasbahs and the Draa valley than in big dunes.
  • A short camel ride and a night at a simple camp are all you need.

Choose Erg Chigaga if…

  • You want remoteness above everything, and don't mind a long 4x4 crossing.
  • You have at least three days and are comfortable with simpler logistics.

"I only have two days"

This is the hard case, and here's our honest advice. If you have two days and you're in Marrakech, Zagora is the realistic option; a 2-day trip to Merzouga means about 20 hours in a car for a single night, which most travelers regret. Enjoy Zagora for what it is: a beautiful drive, a camel ride and a night under the stars.

But if there's any way to find a third day, the difference is huge. With three days you can see the High Atlas, Aït Benhaddou, the gorges and the real Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi. With four days, you even get a full day to explore around them. See our 3-day and 4-day tours from Marrakech, or travel on to Fes with the 3-day Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara.

What about the Agafay desert?

You'll also see day trips and "desert camps" in Agafay, about an hour from Marrakech. Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills, with no sand dunes at all. It can be a pleasant evening out with a view of the Atlas, and some of its camps are very stylish, but it isn't the Sahara. If dunes are what you dream of, Agafay will not deliver them.

Our verdict

For most travelers with three days or more, Merzouga is the trip that matches the Sahara they imagine. Zagora is a good compromise for two days from Marrakech. Erg Chigaga is for adventurers with time. Whichever you choose, give yourself at least one night in the desert: the sunset, the silence and the stars are the reason to go.
