Overview

The 3-day tour is beautiful but busy. With one more day, everything slows down: you get a full day around Erg Chebbi instead of arriving and leaving in a hurry, and two nights near the dunes instead of one.

Use the extra day for nomads, Gnawa music and Rissani, or simply to rest at camp.

Highlights

  • Two nights near Erg Chebbi
  • A free day around the dunes
  • Dades and Todra gorges without the rush

Why four days is the sweet spot

The extra day changes the whole trip. On the 3-day tour from Marrakech you arrive in the dunes in the evening and leave the next morning. With four days you wake up in the desert with a whole day ahead: time to explore the villages and markets around Erg Chebbi, rest through the heat, try sandboarding, or simply sit on a dune and watch the light.

It also gives you more time on the way. You don't have to rush through Aït Benhaddou or the gorges, and the long drive back to Marrakech comes after a good rest instead of straight after the camp.

Day 1: over the High Atlas

We pick you up in Marrakech around 7:30 and climb into the High Atlas, stopping at viewpoints and Berber villages on the way to the Tizi n'Tichka pass. On the southern side you visit Aït Benhaddou with a local guide, have lunch, and continue past Ouarzazate to the palm grove of Skoura, dotted with old earthen kasbahs.

In the late afternoon you arrive in the Dades valley, where you spend the night in a family-run hotel or kasbah, with dinner and views of the red cliffs.

Day 2: the gorges and the first night in the dunes

A morning drive up the Dades gorge to its famous switchbacks, then on to the Todra gorge for a walk between its towering walls. After lunch the road runs east across the desert to Erfoud and Rissani, and on to Merzouga.

At the edge of Erg Chebbi your camels are ready. You ride into the dunes for the sunset and reach our camp as the stars come out, with dinner and drums by the fire.

Day 3: a day around Erg Chebbi

Sunrise, breakfast and the ride back to Merzouga, then the day is yours. Most guests choose the 4x4 tour: tea with a nomad family, Gnawa music in Khamlia, the seasonal lake, fossils and Rissani market. Others prefer a slow day by a pool in Merzouga, a quad ride or sandboarding in the afternoon.

You spend the second desert night either at our camp, for another evening under the stars, or in a guesthouse in Merzouga with a proper room and bathroom. Many guests mix: camp the first night, guesthouse the second.

Day 4: back to Marrakech

An early start for the long drive back, about nine to ten hours with stops. The route can follow the Draa valley via Alnif and N'Kob, or the Dades valley again through Ouarzazate, before crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech. You arrive in the evening.

If you'd rather finish in Fes, we can end the tour there instead, through the Ziz valley and the Middle Atlas.

3 days, 4 days or 5 days?

  • 3 days: the essentials, with one night in the dunes and long driving days
  • 4 days: the same highlights plus a full day around Erg Chebbi, and two nights near the dunes
  • 5 days: the slowest pace, with Aït Benhaddou in the evening light, Skoura and the Valley of Roses, and more time in the gorges

If it's your first time in Morocco and you have the time, four days is the version we recommend most.

What's included and what isn't

The tour includes your private vehicle and driver, pick-up and drop-off in Marrakech, three nights' accommodation with dinner and breakfast, the camel trek and the 4x4 tour on day 3. Lunches, drinks, entrance fees and tips are not included, so you're free to choose where and what you eat.

Tell us if you'd like a luxury tent, more upmarket hotels or a private dinner in the dunes, and we'll include it in your quote.

Best time of year for this tour

Spring and autumn are ideal for this route: green or golden valleys, comfortable days in the desert and mild nights at camp. In spring the almond trees blossom in the High Atlas and the roses bloom around Kelaat M'Gouna in late April and May. In autumn the dates are harvested in the oases, and the light in the desert is soft and clear.

Winter brings snow on the High Atlas and cold desert nights, but sunny days and quiet roads. Summer is hot, especially in the desert, and the free day on day 3 becomes a welcome rest in the shade.

Who chooses the 4-day tour

Couples and friends who want the desert without spending most of the trip in a car. Families with children, who need time to play and rest. Photographers who want more than one sunset and sunrise in the dunes. And anyone who has heard that the 3-day tour is 'a lot of driving' and wants something more relaxed.

It's also the version to choose if you want to combine the desert with an activity: a quad ride, a longer camel trek, or a visit to the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia.

A typical second desert day

Wake up for sunrise on the dunes, then a slow breakfast at camp. Ride back to Merzouga, shower, and set off with a local driver-guide in a 4x4 around Erg Chebbi: tea with a nomad family, music in Khamlia, a look at the fossils and lunch in Rissani, where on market days the souk is at its busiest.

Back in Merzouga by mid-afternoon, there's time to rest before sunset. If you're sleeping at camp again, you ride back out into the dunes for a second evening by the fire; if you've chosen a guesthouse, you can watch the sunset from its terrace or from a dune behind it.

Before you leave Marrakech

Plan at least one full day in Marrakech before the tour, so you start rested. Keep a small day bag for the car with water, snacks, a scarf, sunscreen and a warm layer, and pack a small overnight bag for the camel ride so your suitcase can stay in Merzouga. Bring your passport, some cash in dirhams, and a power bank. And tell us about any dietary needs or special occasions: the camp team loves preparing a surprise.

What to bring

  • Small bag for camp
  • Warm layer
  • Scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen

More space, quality linen, sockets and a private bathroom with hot shower. Choose it in the booking form.

Best time to go

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are ideal for the road trip: the passes are clear, the valleys are green or golden and desert nights are mild. In winter, snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass or the Middle Atlas for a few hours, and we adapt the route. In summer the vehicle is air-conditioned and we plan stops around the hottest hours.
