Overview

There's a lot more to Erg Chebbi than the dunes you can see from Merzouga. This full-day loop takes you around the whole sand sea in a 4x4 with a driver who grew up here and knows the families and tracks along the way.

You'll drink tea with a nomad family, listen to Gnawa music in Khamlia, look for flamingos at the seasonal lake when there's water, stop at fossil sites, and finish in Rissani, the old caravan town with one of the liveliest markets in the south.

Highlights

  • Tea in a nomad family's tent
  • Gnawa music in Khamlia village
  • The seasonal lake, with flamingos in wet years
  • Fossil sites and workshops
  • Rissani market and the old ksar

Why see the desert by 4x4

Erg Chebbi is the star of Merzouga, but the desert around it holds just as many stories. A camel can take you into the dunes; a 4x4 can take you around them, across the black stony plains, through the oases and into the villages where people actually live. In one day you see a side of the Sahara most visitors never do.

The tour is private: the vehicle, the driver and the guide are just for your group, so you can stop wherever you like, stay longer where you're happy and skip what doesn't interest you. Your driver grew up here and knows every track, every family and every good place for tea.

The stops, one by one

  • A nomad family: tea in their tent and a glimpse of a life that still follows the seasons and the grazing
  • Khamlia: a village of Gnawa families, descendants of people brought across the Sahara from West Africa, with music, drums and dancing
  • The seasonal lake (Dayet Srji): after rain it fills and attracts flamingos and other birds; in dry years it's a vast white flat
  • A fossil workshop: the region's black limestone is full of 350-million-year-old fossils, cut and polished into everything from small stones to tables
  • Rissani: lunch, the market and the old ksar, the town at the end of the ancient caravan road

The order changes with the day and the season. On market days (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday in Rissani) we plan the afternoon around the souk.

Gnawa music in Khamlia

Khamlia is a small village south of Merzouga, home to Gnawa families whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa. Their music, played on the guembri (a three-stringed bass lute), big iron castanets called qraqeb and drums, has deep spiritual roots and an irresistible rhythm. In Khamlia the musicians welcome visitors with tea and a performance in their house.

There's no ticket: it's customary to leave a contribution for the musicians, or to buy one of their CDs. Your guide will tell you what is usual. Many guests find this the most memorable hour of the day.

Fossils, minerals and how to buy them

The region between Erfoud and Merzouga is one of the richest fossil areas in the world. Ammonites, orthoceras and trilobites from the ancient sea that once covered the Sahara are cut out of the black stone and polished in local workshops. You'll see how it's done, from the raw block to the finished piece.

If you'd like to buy something, there's no obligation and no commission for us. Prices are negotiable. Be aware that some trilobites sold to tourists are partly reconstructed; reputable workshops will tell you honestly what you're buying.

Rissani and its market

Rissani was once the capital of the Tafilalet region and the last stop for caravans coming north across the Sahara. Today it's a busy market town, with one of the most authentic souks in southern Morocco: dates by the kilo, spices, baskets, livestock, and a donkey park on market days.

Lunch is a good chance to try madfouna, the 'Berber pizza': a flatbread stuffed with spiced meat, onions and herbs, baked in a wood oven. Vegetarian versions are available. After lunch you can walk through the old ksar and visit the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, ancestor of Morocco's royal family (from the outside for non-Muslims).

Comfort and timing

We pick you up at your hotel around 9:00 and you're back by about 16:00, in time to rest before sunset or join a camel trek to camp. In summer we can start earlier and finish before the hottest hours. The 4x4 is air-conditioned, and parts of the route are on desert tracks, so expect a few bumps; your driver adjusts the speed to your group.

Bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, water (we provide some too), some cash for lunch, the musicians and souvenirs, and modest clothes for the villages. Children enjoy the day, and we can shorten it if they get tired.

Combine it with a camel trek

The 4x4 tour fits perfectly into a stay in Merzouga. A popular plan is to arrive in the morning, do the 4x4 tour, and finish at the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon for the sunset camel trek to our camp. The next morning you watch sunrise, ride back and continue your journey.

If you only have half a day, our Nomad Family & Khamlia Gnawa Music tour covers the first two stops in about four hours.

The landscape around the dunes

Seen from the road, Erg Chebbi looks like an island of orange sand floating on a black sea. The 'sea' is the hamada, the stony desert of the Sahara, made of dark pebbles polished by the wind. On the 4x4 tour you cross it on tracks used by locals for generations, past dry riverbeds, acacia trees, the remains of old mining villages and the green patches of the oasis gardens.

Your driver will stop wherever there's something to see: a herd of camels grazing, the ruins of an old ksar, a well where nomads water their goats, or simply a viewpoint where the dunes rise straight out of the plain.

Who enjoys this tour most

Curious travelers who want to understand the desert, not just look at it. Families with children who like animals, music and fossils. Couples spending two nights in Merzouga who want a change from the dunes. And anyone whose idea of travel includes long conversations over tea.

If you'd rather be active, combine a shorter version of the tour with a quad ride or sandboarding in the afternoon. If you'd rather go slow, we can skip the lake and the fossils and spend longer with the nomad family and in Khamlia.

What to bring

  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Cash for lunch and souvenirs
  • Comfortable clothes

Good to know

  • Rissani's market is busiest on market days. We'll plan around them.
  • Can be combined with a sunset camel trek the same evening.

Best time to go

Any month works in Merzouga. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are the most comfortable. In summer we start camel rides late in the afternoon and quad rides early in the morning, and in winter the evenings are cold, so bring a warm layer. Use the month guide and live weather on our home page to see what to expect.

Questions about this tour

Is the price per person?

No, per vehicle, for up to 4 or 5 people.

Can we shorten it?

Yes. See our half-day nomad and Gnawa tour.

Is it a bumpy ride?

Some tracks are rough, but our drivers take it slowly.

Is lunch included?

Lunch isn't included, so you can choose where and what you eat. In Rissani it costs little, and your guide will recommend a good place.

Can we see flamingos?

Only when the seasonal lake has water, usually after a wet winter or spring. In dry years the lake is empty, and we'll tell you before you go.

Do we have to buy anything at the fossil workshop?

No. It's a visit, not a shopping stop. If you'd like something, buy only what you love, and bargain politely.

Can the 4x4 drive on the dunes?

We drive around the dunes and on desert tracks, not over the big dunes themselves. The dunes are best explored on foot or by camel.

Can we do the 4x4 tour on the way to our camel trek?

Yes. Many guests finish the tour at the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon and set off on the sunset camel trek to our camp from there.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes. Children enjoy the music in Khamlia, the nomad family's animals and the fossils. We can shorten the day if they get tired.

What days is Rissani market?

The big souk is on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. On other days the town is quieter, but the shops, the ksar and the restaurants are open.
